Nova 535's Got Talent: The Big Bang Show Is LOL Funny
Vi Noy catches some of the comedy acts at Nova, including Big Cheese's take on Krispy Kreme Doughnuts and a hilarious impersonation of Lady Gaga.
Often I text LOL in Facebook or on Twitter, but at the Big Bang Show at Nova 535, I actually did LOL -- and so loudly -- that fellow audience members turned their heads, as well as some of the acts on stage.
“I was thinking about them, thinking about me, thinking about how many I’m gonna eat. I open my eyes I was in front of Krispy Kreme…” contestant Big Cheese rapped to the tune of Nelly’s song “Just a Dream.”
Big Cheese may have not been the winner of this adult-only variety show, but if I were one of the judges, he definitely would have moved onto the next round. This hysterical St. Petersburg native is a parody rapper with more than 2.7 million page views on YouTube and is referred to as to “the black Weird Al Yankovic.”
“And I realize I’m addicted to Krispy Kreme. Every time I wake up and I think about the glaze. I fell in love with them after my first taste.”
I guess I’m getting ahead of myself, but honestly I’ve replayed his video so many times I’m still laughing. Speaking of laughing, the co-sponsors of this event held the first Thursday of every month, Got Jokes? Improv are full of enough hilarious shenanigans to steal the show away from some of the contestants.
The cast members entertained the crowd in between each act, with one of my favorite bits being what they called “Got Jokes? Remote Control.” The audience yells out a TV show and the comedians got to town acting like the characters until the next TV show is selected. I laughed as they went from "Seinfeld" to "Sanford & Son" to "South Park." By the way, Chuck Glass sounds just like Cartman!
Contestant and comedian Greg Kash was a hoot. too. I wasn’t sure what to expect when he stepped on stage and began with his act filled with deadpan and self-deprecating humor.
“Me llamo Gregorio. That is my name in Spanish,” Kash started and went on to make quite a few jokes, with a hint of a Mexican accent, including talking as a taco—maybe you had to be there. But he quickly won over the crowd and won the wild card.
Now contestant Shakemode, a local rock-raggae-punk-funk band had the whole crowd jamming with a medley that ranged from Lady Gaga to Michael Jackson. While they didn’t win, they got Vi taping her toes. I’m definitely going to have to check them out again soon.
As for the winner, Ben B., it’s difficult to come up with the words to describe his act. The St. Pete native and teacher is a poet and spoken word artist.
“You’re a fighter or a lover,” Ben B. recited. “Well, I hope you‘re the latter.”
Well Ben, it turned out the judges and the audience loved you! Ben took home $250 in cash and will get to compete in the finals for a grand. Not bad, just don’t ask me to try reciting your poems. I couldn’t quite keep up.
